Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Is there a college degree in your future? Don't let the high cost of tuition stand in your way. If you're a UAW-Chrysler worker, the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) gives you the means to pay for your education.

TAP provides up-front payments to eligible workers who have reached full seniority for courses at approved schools. You can earn a diploma or GED, pursue advanced degrees, develop new trade and technical skills or take classes for personal enrichment.

Your annual tuition assistance allowance is $5,000 for courses leading to a degree from an accredited college or university. Tuition assistance for job-related courses is $2,050 per year. For personal development courses at NTC-approved schools, the cap is $1,500 a year. If you're participating in more than one category of tuition assistance, you are eligible for a total of $5,000 in one calendar year.

To avoid delays in the processing of an application, please submit it as soon as you register for a class.

Importance of accredited institutions
It is crucial to find out if the institution you are considering is accredited. Making sure in advance that your school is accredited means that your credits are more likely to be accepted by other accredited schools if you should need to transfer.

Advance payment
If you're enrolled in a college degree program, and you exhaust your current tuition assistance, you can use up to $1,000 of your next year's tuition assistance. Advance payment does not expand the total tuition assistance available to you but allows some flexibility.

Surviving spouse/child
A spouse or child of an employee who dies while on the active payroll is entitled to use the remaining balance of the employee's tuition assistance within four years following the date of the worker's death. Contact the TAP office for an application.

For more information, contact Patrick Byers or Colleen McBrady at the NTC, 313.567.3300.

You can contact the TAP office toll-free at 800.225.1416 (in Michigan) or 800.241.1416 (elsewhere). You may fax applications to the office at 248.557.4604.

How it Works

If you want to use TAP funds for a class, here's what you need to do:

1. Get a TAP application     from your Local Training     Facilitator, contact the     TAP office or down-
    load an application

by clicking on the
    picture of the form     below.

2. Fill it out and mail to:
    UAW-Chrysler
    Tuition Assistance     Program
    PO Box 166
    Southfield, MI 48037

3. Register for the class.

If approved, the TAP office will mail you a voucher to give to the school at the time you register, or shortly thereafter.

What's Off Limits

Your application for TAP funds could be denied if:

  • The school or course you're planning to attend is not approved by the NTC.
  • TAP has already paid for you to take the class.
  • You have exhausted your TAP allowance for the current year.
  • You are not in the Chrysler database.
(To be eligible for TAP, you must have full seniority and be on active roll the day class begins.)

If your application is not   approved, you'll get a letter explaining why.
