Health and Safety
Programs
Nothing is
more important to the UAW and Chrysler than the safety
and well being of workers. And, so, no area receives higher
priority than our health and safety training programs. Developed
at the NTC by the National Joint Committee on Health and Safety,
these programs include:
- Confined
Space Entry
- Energy
Lockout/Energy Control
- Ergonomics
Awareness
- Hazardous

- Industrial
Powered Vehicles
- Inspection
of Overhead Cranes, Hoists and Slings
- Personal

Safety
Training
is delivered through kiosks in each facility. The stand-alone
systems contain multimedia programs that workers can use on
their own, testing their understanding of the material at the
end of each segment. A UAW Health and Safety Trainer is on
hand to schedule workers for time on the kiosks and answer
their questions. Additional health and safety training for
the skilled trades is provided by UAW-Chrysler journeymen
at our Technology Training Center.

Certification
of Health and Safety Reps
A one-of-a-kind program developed by our Health and Safety Department
and Ferris State University enables UAW and Chrysler Health and
Safety Representatives to become certified health and safety specialists.
The 240 hours of classwork cover a range of subjects, from specific health
and safety issues to effective listening and preventing job burnout.
Participants must pass proficiency exams to receive credit.
Reps
maintain their certification by taking an additional 24
hours of
training annually.
Plant
Audits Now Unscheduled
To ensure consistent compliance with safety standards, the National Joint Committee
on Health and Safety has authorized a joint team to conduct unannounced audits
of plants and parts distribution centers. The audits assess facilities' adherence
to federal and state regulations, as well as Chrysler guidelines and
UAW contractual language.
Supporting
Research
As part of their commitment to ensuring a safe workplace, the UAW and
Chrysler sponsor a number of occupational
health research projects. Research is conducted by academicians and
other specialists in the field of occupational safety and health. A scientific
advisory board made up of occupational health experts assists the NTC
in identifying projects and monitoring progress.
