9/3/10 HAPPY LABOR DAY! NTC will be closed on annual workers' holiday
DETROIT – The UAW-Chrysler
National Training Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of
Labor Day, the national holiday recognizing the value of work and the people
who do it.
We will reopen Tuesday,
Sept. 7.
On Monday here in Detroit, labor supporters will be turning out for the annual Labor Day Parade, one of the largest of many such events
held around the country to recognize labor and its history.
More than a score of unions and supporting groups will march in the miles-long and thousands-strong parade, whose theme this year is "Good Jobs NOW!"
In this video, The History Channel takes a look at the origins of Labor Day, changing manufacturing methods and legislative gains made by labor unions.
The marchers will be led by the Detroit Federation of Musicians and Detroit Symphony musicians, who are currently involved in a labor dispute with orchestra management.
There are two routes for the massive parade, one down Michigan Avenue from Trumbull, which begins at 9 a.m., and the other down Woodward Avenue from from the Cultural Center area, which steps off at 9:30.
Both groups of marchers will converge downtown at Hart Plaza on the Detroit River.
Join us if you can, but whatever your plans for the traditional end-of-summer holiday, have a safe and enjoyable
weekend.
