HELP FOR HAITI

UAW, Chrysler donate to earthquake relief effort

Haitians reach out for donated food and water being passed out by aid workers following the earthquake.

DETROIT – The UAW and Chrysler both have stepped up to provide relief for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti Jan. 12.

Both company and union have made large cash donations to help the hundreds of thousand of Haitians whose lives have been shattered by the quake and both urged members and employees to donate as well.

The UAW donated $500,000 to the William J. Clinton Foundation to help the people of Haiti, while the Chrysler Foundation donated $50,000 to Oxfam America and another $50,000 to the United States Fund for UNICEF to support earthquake relief and recovery efforts by those organizations.

"The people of Haiti desperately need food, water, medical care and hope," UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said. "The women and men of the UAW stand with thousands of other organizations and ordinary citizens in their desire to help the Haitian people meet their basic human needs."

“The Chrysler Foundation expresses support to the people of Haiti who are struggling to recover from this devastating earthquake,” said Brian Glowiak, who heads the Chrysler Foundation. “Many relief organizations such as Oxfam America and UNICEF are gathering resources for immediate support to the impoverished nation, as well as in the long term as Haiti works to rebuild its infrastructure and the Haitian citizens work to rebuild their lives and communities.”

The Chrysler Foundation will also collect donation checks from Chrysler Group employees, dealers and retirees who are interested in contributing to Oxfam or UNICEF, allowing the Company’s extended organization to stand together in its support of Haiti relief efforts. (See box, below right.)

           Standing together
