Programs
serve UAW-DC workers' children in Detroit and Toledo
Through
Communities in Schools of Detroit, Inc., the NTC has developed
five before- and after-school programs in the City of Detroit.
The program continues to allow the children of UAW-represented
DaimlerChrysler workers to engage in diverse activities that
will help them develop academic and personal skills as well
as the knowledge to succeed in school and in life.
Communities
in Schools is a non-profit group that marshals community
resources to support schools, developed the 5-year-old initiative
for the Alliance, a consortium consisting of the UAW-DaimlerChrysler
National Training Center and joint programs at UAW-Ford and
UAW-GM.
The programs
operate every school day, from dismissal until at least 6
p.m., throughout the school year. There is no cost to eligible
workers. Enrollment begins in late summer. Further information
may be obtained by calling Communities in Schools, 313.571.3400.
The NTC
also has contracted with the YMCA at 17 locations in the
Toledo, Ohio, area for before- and after-school programs.
The YMCA also provides bus transportation to the children
of UAW-represented DaimlerChrysler workers who participate
in the programs.
